Find out how to improve the health of your home with Habitat Saudável.

Our home should be the place where we are safe, but the truth is that this is not always the case: did you know that you can be exposed to a significant amount of allergens (such as dust, pollen, mould or pet dander) that can have a negative impact on your health?

Many of the allergic diseases that affect a significant part of the Portuguese population, such as asthma, rhinitis, dust mite or pollen allergies, can be traced back to the poor quality of the indoor air we breathe in our homes.

One of the main solutions for reducing allergies is to clean and sanitise the different areas of your home on a regular basis. Pay special attention to preventing dust from accumulating inside your home by following these steps:

  • Wipe dust from the different areas of the house with damp cloths and/or a hoover with a HEPA (high-efficiencyparticulateair) filter, which has the capacity to trap very small particles/allergens. Pay special attention to cleaning sofas, armchairs, furniture and children’s soft toys;
  • Clean windows and blinds regularly, opting in this case for airtight solutions;
  • Avoid thick carpets and rugs whenever possible, as they are a source of dust accumulation;
  • Opt for smooth walls with easily washable materials and avoid wallpaper;
  • Get rid of all kinds of objects you no longer use and which end up being an inevitable source of dust;
  • Clean the house with materials of natural and ecological origin, since traditional cleaning products contain various chemical substances, which can sometimes cause various allergic reactions.

However, as well as cleaning your home, you should implement a series of daily practices and behaviours to minimise and/or eradicate this problem. In this context, we share with you 5 tips to make it easier for you to have a home free of potential allergy hotspots:

  • Ventilate the house daily for 5-10 minutes (preferably cross-ventilate), in order to renew the indoor air;
  • To prevent pollens from penetrating inside the house, ventilate the areas of the house opposite the prevailing winds;
  • Avoid high levels of relative humidity (check with an inexpensive digital hygrometer);
  • In damp environments that are prone to mould growth, paint the walls with silicate paint;
  • Favour natural lighting in all areas of the house.

Remember: by putting our tips into practice, you’ll be living in a home that’s more conducive to your family’s health and well-being. If you want to know more about the health of your home, check out our book or contact us.
