“RADON, CO2 AND FINAL PARTICULES DETECTED IN PORTO AND BRAGANÇA SCHOOLS

Asthma, lack of attention and potentially cancer . A study from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto found over 50 schools with agents that could be dangerous for children.

The result of the study is clear. In 65% of Bragança’s school and nursery classrooms there is more radon than the law allows. As for an excessive level of fine particles, it was detected in 84% of the 58 rooms of Porto and Bragança that were the target of the study.

Sofia Sousa, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), PhD in Environmental Engineering, underlines that fine particles (dust) increase the likelihood of babies and children contracting asthma.

Too much CO2 in the classroom makes students more easily distracted.

Radon concentrations (natural radioactive gas, carcinogenic pollutant) are also of concern, especially in Bragança, but although in adults it is the second cause of lung cancer, there are still no studies linking this radioactive gas to cancer in children, says researcher Sofia. Sousa

The data collected is “worrisome but not alarming,” the researcher says, explaining that a simple and cost-effective measure, such as air ventilation, can significantly lower carbon dioxide and radon concentration levels.

As for dust, it is recommended that the rooms be vacuumed more frequently.
