Many people wonder if the router they have in their living room or bedroom could harm their family’s health. It’s a legitimate question, especially when you have children at home or spend many hours connected to the internet.

In this article, we will look at this issue from two complementary perspectives:

the dominant scientific position (WHO and ICNIRP)

and the vision of independent scientific bodies (Bionitiative Report, European Environment Agency and the ICEMS Guidelines)

This way we’ll clarify whether there really is cause for concern, what the science says, and – most importantly – what practical actions we can take to optimize the well-being of our homes.

The aim is not to create alarm – but to provide informed information.

What is Electromagnetic Radiation?

Before answering whether Wi-Fi is bad for you, we need to understand what electromagnetic radiation is.

Electromagnetic radiation is a form of energy that propagates through space. There is a whole spectrum of radiation, from radio waves (very weak) to gamma rays (very powerful). Wi-Fi is in the microwave range, specifically in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band.

Types of Radiation in the Electromagnetic Spectrum:

Radio waves (non-ionizing)

Microwaves (Wi-Fi, cell phones – non-ionizing)

Infrared light (heat – non-ionizing)

Visible light (non-ionizing)

Ultraviolet light (partly ionizing)

X-rays (medical – ionizing)

Gamma rays (very dangerous – ionizing)

Key point: According to bodies such as ICNIRP, Wi-Fi radiation is non-ionizing, which means that it doesn’t have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and damage DNA. It is ionizing radiation (such as UV, X-rays and gamma rays) that can cause cell damage.

However, according to Bionitiative, “non-ionizing does not mean biologically neutral“; several studies have been analysed which indicate that there may be non-thermal biological effects, such as:

Oxidative stress

Cellular changes

Impact on the nervous system

What Does Science Say About Wi-Fi and The radiation used is non-ionizing, i.e. it doesn’t have enough energy to directly damage DNA. Entities such as the WHO and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection consider typical exposure levels to be safe. The IARC classifies radiofrequencies as “possibly carcinogenic” (Group 2B), a category that reflects limited and inconclusive evidence. On the other hand, independent reports such as the BioInitiative Working Group advocate a more cautious approach, suggesting that the biological effects of prolonged exposure are not yet fully understood. In practical terms: there is no cause for alarm, but adopting simple precautionary measures can be an informed choice.Important: factors such as smoking, excessive sun exposure and diet have a proven, much more significant impact on cancer risk than exposure to Wi-Fi in the home."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Are children more vulnerable to the risks of Wi-Fi?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"According to the prevailing scientific evidence, there is no confirmation that children are more vulnerable to Wi-Fi specifically. Entities such as the WHO and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection consider current exposure levels to be safe for all age groups. However, some independent approaches, such as that of the BioInitiative Working Group, argue that children may deserve additional attention, given their greater biological sensitivity and longer lifetime exposure. In practical terms: there is no reason to be overly concerned, but it is wise to adopt an informed precautionary stance, especially in children’s environments.– Position the router away from the bedroom– Avoid unnecessary exposure during sleep– Favor an environment with less technological load at nightSimple measures, with no negative impact, that contribute to a more balanced and healthy environment."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What's the difference between Wi-Fi and mobile?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Both use non-ionizing radiation (radiofrequency), but there are important differences in the way we are exposed:Cell phone: Can emit power equal to or greater than Wi-Fi and is used very close to the body – especially near the head during calls, which significantly increases local exposureWi-Fi: Generally emits less power and is located at a greater distance (meters), which substantially reduces exposure.Total exposure: In general, exposure to cell phones tends to be higher than to Wi-Fi, especially when used for long periods throughout the day."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Should I turn off the Wi-Fi at night?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It’s not compulsory, but it’s good practice for several reasons:Reduces exposure during sleep (when the body is at rest)Save energyCan improve sleep quality (less electronic stimulation)It’s a simple, intelligent precautionMany routers have a scheduling function – set it to switch off automatically between 11pm and 7am, for example."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Should I use Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"If you want to completely minimize exposure to Wi-Fi radiation, yes – Ethernet cable is a must.
